Italy 2019 - Rome Day 1
After a tearful and eventful (he threw up in the car on the way to the cat hotel!) goodbye to Diego yesterday afternoon, we headed to Heathrow, stopping off at Pizza Express for dinner on the way.
We stayed at the Sofitel Hotel at Heathrow Terminal 5 (which was very nice!) and ordered a couple of mocktails to have in our room while Helen opened a couple of her birthday presents early!
It was an early start this morning, with the alarm going off at 4:30AM! At least it was only a short 5 minute walk from the hotel to the terminal where we checked in and grabbed some breakfast and a coffee before boarding our plane headed for Rome!
We landed in Rome at around 10:30AM local time and, after clearing passport control with our EU passports for possibly the last time, we caught the train into the city centre. After a grilled veggie sandwich and vegan croissant, we checked in to our (very fancy!) hotel, The Hive, and visited the rooftop bar to soak up the 36°C heat with a cold drink.
We then went for a stroll in the heart of Rome in the afternoon to take in a few of the most famous sites. Although we were starting to feel tired at this point, we particularly enjoyed seeing the Pantheon, which was built in 127 AD, and the Trevi Fountain, which is gigantic and magical!
To end our day, we enjoyed dinner at a little cafe not far from the hotel and then went back to our room and passed out at about 9:00PM! We are off on a coach trip to Mt. Vesuvius and Naples tomorrow so another early start.
