Italy 2019 - Florence Day 5

Italy 2019 - Florence Day 5

After another epic breakfast, we checked out of our hotel and boarded the train (just in time!) to Florence. The trains here are much more spacious and comfortable than the ones we’re used to at home, and there was plenty of air conditioning, too. We were a bit sad to be leaving Rome, as we’ve had some of the best experiences here. But we were looking forward to exploring a new place!

We arrived in Florence around midday. As a welcoming gesture, a bird took a dump on Ryan’s shoulder and in his hair. Which was hilarious. After dropping off our bags at the B&B and having some snacks, we walked over Ponte Vecchio, the oldest bridge in Florence, and took in the Pitti Palace.

We then headed to Boboli Garden, taking care to dodge the showers but grateful for the reprieve from the heat of the past few days! The tranquil gardens offered wonderful views of Florence and beyond.

Later, we freshened up and headed back out. We stopped for a cold drink at a bar, and then had dinner at a vegetarian/vegan restaurant called La Pépinière Ristorante Biologico. We decided to try a little of everything and went for grilled “cheese”, fried dough balls and roasted vegetables for starters, aubergine ravioli for our first course, and a margherita pizza for the main. All of the “cheese” was the cheesiest non-cheese that we’ve ever tasted! And the ravioli is the best thing we’ve eaten out here so far.

To end our day, we strolled through the city and ended up back at Ponte Vecchio, where a band happened to be playing. Florence is much more atmospheric and laid back than Rome and we like it a lot!
